YELL – Young Europeans Love Languages

YELL is 3 year Languages Network Project which started in January 2009 and will run until December 2011. This network comprises 11 partner organisations from across 10 European countries; Germany, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Holland, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy, Latvia and the UK.

There are also a large number of associated partners involved in the project from all participating countries that will enhance and support the project outcomes and results.

The main aim of the project is to increase the motivation of young people to learn foreign languages outside of formal education by offering a variety of attractive and interesting learning methods and environments via cultural, social and sports clubs.



The Network will achieve this by:

  • The sharing of existing good practice of language learning across the partner countries.
  • Researching previous project outcomes where innovative and useful language tools have been developed but not sustained and where possible, revive and adapt them for use with young people in non-formal and informal environments.
  • Creating a toolbox containing language learning tools which have been adapted to suit other social, cultural and sporting activities directed at young people.
  • Promoting an awareness of the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe through thematic seminars and demonstration events plus a final international conference.
  • Enhancing the collaboration between trainers and tutors of non-formal education institutions, cultural, sport and social institutions, key actors for lifelong learning, national and European language learning networks and social partners.



The Outputs will be:

  • A virtual documentation centre integrated in the project’s website, in all partner languages
  • A Handbook ‘How to implement best practice’ in all partner languages.
  • 6 x Newsletters; in all partner languages the following languages.
  • 2 x Thematic seminars focussing on the research and results plus an final International Conference.
  • A number of demonstration events in each partner country focusing on dissemination project activities and results.
  • Publications about project activities and foreseen results
